Gerona makes a good alternative airport to Barcelona International airport if you want to find a budget flight or if you want to visit the coast. You will have a 1 hour drive to Barcelona or 1 hour 20 minute train ride. There is however excellent road access to both Barcelona and the Costa Brava and if you want someone else to do the driving then you can consider taking the Barcelona Bus.
